Call me old fashioned, but I really want my kid leaving school knowing what a bushel is, knows the difference between stanzas and paragraphs and know how to put a sentence in a sentence diagram.  Is it too much to ask?

That's just being silly.  I have unwittingly say "Merry Christmas" to people running a Hebrew school and to people running an Islamic center in my neighborhood, and they have always said "Merry Christmas" back.
